About

A team of students from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign competed in the Solar Decathlon for the first time in 2007. They created a house powered only by solar energy and transported it to Washington, D.C. for the 2007 Solar Decathlon. There the team icompeted with 19 other universities from around the world from Oct. 2-20, 2007. The Illinois team won two of the 10 contests and finished ninth overall.

The competition, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, was previously held in 2002 and 2005 and will be held again in 2009.

For info on the current UI entry, see the team’s Web site at www.solardecathlon.uiuc.edu. For details on the competition, see the site at www.solardecathlon.org. For info on the 2007 University of Illinois entry, see www.comm.uiuc.edu/solardecathlon .

I visited your house at the Solar Decathlon, and was very pleasantly impressed. It is a nice an “livable’ house, with many attractive touches, besides being efficient and Solar-powered. I also enjoyed very much your video presentation, the way you showed the modules being added and taken away, and the maquette you had on display. I did comment to soemone there that you could think about producing this maquette-modules as toys for pre-schoolers, together with a little lesson on solar power-the way of the very near future! I teach pre-schoolers, and would be thrilled to have something along those lines for my class. Maybe a min-solar panel to power little LED lights? (Sort of the patio solar lights in my front yard)
    Well, it is an idea!
Congratulations on a very good job, good luck in Chicago!

Great jobs guys! I am developing a LEED Platinum home in West Michigan. However, the project will be in the design and engineering phase for the next 12 months or so. I am looking to put a structure on the property as a semi permanent-permanent structure that will act as a destination point for now as well and ultimately a shelter while we are constructing the new home.Is your building for sale? I would welcome on-going research as well as active participation in my new project.

    Thank you

We want to see more of the Element Home and would like to know if there is a working demonstration of this solar home that we would be able to see in person. We are sorry to have missed the opportunity in early March.

    Thanks for any updates. Kathy
